Great post. I like how you layout the strategic and structural ways you encouraged individual change. Is there a sample padlet with a few example posts available to view? To coordinate this sharing time, the three high school instructional technology coaches organized a “speed dating” event. In January, all high school teachers were asked to create an engagement commitment for second semester. Commitments didn’t need to be related to technology, but many were. Staff worked on these commitments, implemented them with their students over the past four months, and shared their progress and results with department colleagues at the February and March department meetings.

Some worked and met with one of the technology instructional coaches individually. All teachers shared their commitment and the results in the form of an initial and follow up post on a Padlet wall. The speed dating event was set up as a time for teachers to share their results cross departmentally. The instructional technology coaches had tables of 16 set up in a large multipurpose room with seats labeled by subject areas.

Teachers repeated this two more times. This was a great culminating event for the high school staff. By using the time before school, no subs were required for everyone to meet and share with one another.

Translation necessarily reflects a dual culture, that of its source and its destination. Yet it is never a perfect mirror reflection, instead refracting off a multitude of distinct or connected histories, values, expectations, and languages as it moves between and across cultures. Somewhere within that web of bouncing light lies the creativity and agency of the translator, as well. How do ideological or theoretical prisms intermediate what gets translated, or how translations are produced and read?

Does a retranslation, like a refraction, open the original to new readings? Can translation, in light of these themes, provide new ways of learning and discovery in the classroom? Our conference aims to explore, complicate, refine our understanding of these themes. This is an exciting time to be part of the conversation on translating literature. We invite you—translators, scholars, readers, editors, students, publishers, citizens, and teachers—to join us at the panels, roundtables, workshops, and bilingual readings of the annual conference, on the website, and through ALTA’s presence in social media as we build this conversation together.

Speed-dating for Local Food Producers and Buyers Buying food locally helps strengthen our communities and can provide fresh and healthy food while increasing understanding and appreciation of neighboring farms, orchards and vineyards. Restaurants and other food service organizations can highlight local food to differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace. Direct marketing helps producers manage market risk by giving them more control over how and when they sell their products, more control over pricing and a greater share of the revenue from sales.

Institutional buyers likewise gain more control of their supply chain by dealing directly with producers to communicate specific requirements. By providing training and creating direct connections we can provide producers with the skills they need to sell to new kinds of buyers and the opportunity to connect one-on-one with restauranteurs, chefs, distributors, marketing networks, and institutional buyers who wish to feature local foods in their menus.

Several producers and their buyers will share their stories and answer questions.

Over 50 educators from more than 10 states convened at the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota for the Summer Institute for Climate Change Education for four impactful days of climate change education. The Institute focused on giving educators the tools and resources to integrate climate change into a variety of educational settings. Thanks to generous donors, we were able to offer 13 scholarships to out-of-state educators to travel and attend this training, which made the cohort from this year diverse in reach, yet people found common ground in the challenges and successes in teaching climate change.

There was time for networking and reflecting, and educators were able to communicate about developing the groundwork to bridge the needs between schools and non-formal education centers. The University of MN had an abundance of scientists, graduate students, Institute on the Environment staff, programs, and labs that were featured during the week, and educators learned of the places at the University of MN where they could get real-world, authentic data that they can use with their students.

We devoted the Summer Institute to this resource recognizing that climate change provides a real-world context for learning the disciplinary core ideas of climate change, and utilizing the scientific and engineering practices outlined in NGSS. Each day included a guiding question that was then addressed through curriculum lessons and speaker content, so that by the end of the week the educators had a robust knowledge base of climate change, impacts, and solutions.

Guiding questions for each day included:. Check out the interactive agenda below and click on the presentations, resources, and worksheets to see what the Summer Institute was all about! Summer Institute attendees were oriented to our interdisciplinary and solutions-oriented approach to teaching climate change.

Day 1 focused on the evidence of climate change and common misinformation.

Domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sex trafficking continue to be serious, yet often ignored problems, and places we expect to be safe — homes, schools, theaters, hospitals — have sometimes experienced bloodshed and murder. Violence in video games, television, and film has become more graphic and explicit, and extreme aggression in professional sports now results in brain and other life-shortening injuries.
